I recently installed Ubuntu 15.04, but couldn’t launch gnome-terminal via the desktop or from the commandline (xterm worked fine). Turns out it is a known bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/1448563 related to invalid local settings. In my case, the cause was a $HOME/.pam_environment file that I had restored from a backup of my home directory on another OS installation.
